This Ova, Cysts and Parasites Stool Test is tested to investigate if the patient has been infected by parasites within the gastrointestinal tract. This test is usually tested when the patient has had symptoms such as diarrhoea for a long period of time, abdominal pain and possibly mucus/blood in the stool. Also if the patient has recently travelled outside of the UK and may have drunk contaminated food or water or have been exposed to someone who has an infection (parasitic).
Diseases caused by human parasites remain on a worldwide basis among the principle causes of morbidity and mortality. Correct diagnosis of intestinal parasitic infection depends on proper collection, transport, detection and identification of parasites.
