HDL
HDL (high density lipoprotein) is the component of cholesterol that is associated with good health, and high levels within a health screen are linked to reduced risk of heart and blood vessel disease.
LDL
LDL (low density lipoprotein) is the component of cholesterol that is associated with higher risk of heart and blood vessel disease. The ideal level within a health screening is below 2.5 mmol/L
Triglycerides
Triglycerides are a category of fat found in the blood. Triglycerides effectively store energy for later use by the body. High triglyceride levels within a health screening are associated with pancreatitis, and possibly heart disease and strokes. Some medication can cause the level to rise, as can poorly controlled diabetes.
Apolipoprotein B
Apolipoprotein B (apoB) - this is the main protein component of LDL particles + the precursors, VLDL + IDL. Each of these particles contain one apoB molecule. Measuring Apolipoprotein A1 + Apolipoprotein B helps to estimate the concentration of cholesterol particles. ApoB is one of two most important structural proteins for the cholesterol particles.
Lipoprotein A
Lipoprotein (a) (Lpa) - This consisits of LDL particles bound to apolipoprotein a by a disulphide bridge. Lipoprotein (a) is seen to be a risk factor for the development of ischaemic cardiovascular disease. Levels of Lipoprotein (a) are often genetically determined. This test is often advised if the patient has a moderate to high risk of cardiovascular disease.
