CA 72-4 is found in increased quantities in many gut and gynaecological cancers. Significantly high levels may indicate recurrent disease. The combination of CA 72-4 with other known tumour markers, such as CEA and CA 19-9 for bowel cancer, or CA 125 for ovarian cancer may lead to improved sensitivity when monitoring for relapse of the disease. No screening process is 100% reliable - there is always a chance that you can get a false positive result (a result which may indicate a problem when there is in fact no problem) or a false negative result (an apparently favourable result in the presence of disease).
